On Thursday, August 8th, the United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) urged the United States to consider military action against Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) positions in Iran, emphasizing the need for a more robust deterrence strategy to address escalating threats from the Iranian regime.

In a comprehensive report, UANI highlighted the surge in attacks by Iranian proxies on US interests since Hamas’ October 7th assault on Israel. The organization stressed that as regional conflicts intensify, the United States must adopt a more assertive stance in confronting Iranian-led aggression in the Middle East to achieve effective deterrence.

The New York-based think tank detailed how the Iranian regime and the IRGC, aided by their proxies, have conducted relentless attacks over the past ten months. These assaults have employed a wide array of weapons, including ballistic missiles, rockets, and drones, targeting American assets and destabilizing the entire region.

According to UANI’s statistics, the Iranian regime has been directly or indirectly involved in over 450 attacks on US interests since October 7th, 2023. In contrast, the United States has responded only 88 times. The organization argues that these retaliatory measures, which primarily target regional proxies rather than IRGC interests, have failed to serve as an effective deterrent against the Iranian regime.

The report identifies several proxy forces under the command of the Iranian regime and its Quds Force, the foreign operations branch of the IRGC. These include the Houthis in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in the Palestinian territories, and various Shiite groups in Iraq. These proxies have repeatedly attacked US goals and interests in the region over recent months.

UANI, a non-partisan, non-profit organization based in New York, is dedicated to preventing the Iranian regime from acquiring nuclear weapons. The organization recently underwent a leadership change, with Jeb Bush, son and brother of two former US presidents, appointed as the new head of the group on Monday, August 5th. Bush received his mandate from Mark Wallace, UANI’s executive director, replacing the late Joseph Lieberman.

As tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East, UANI’s call for a more decisive US strategy against Iranian aggression adds to the ongoing debate about how best to address the complex geopolitical challenges in the region.
